Hidden Benefits of Nature-Based Retreats

Here at Toji, we’ve had the privilege of witnessing profound transformation through nature-based retreats. Time and time again, we’ve seen firsthand how reconnecting with nature can positively impact people’s wellbeing. For us, this is a powerful reminder of something humans have always known: we are deeply connected to the natural world.

Over time, many of us have become increasingly disconnected from nature. For some people, it’s not even accessible to spend five quiet minutes touching the grass, sitting beneath a tree, listening to birds, or observing the tiny insects that inhabit the forest floor. Yet simple rituals like these have been shown to reduce stress, ease symptoms of anxiety, and support overall mental wellbeing. Unfortunately, these moments have gradually disappeared from many of our daily lives, making it more important than ever to intentionally nurture this connection again.

Although we host many different types of retreats—including yoga, breathwork, grief support, plant medicine, corporate retreats, family gatherings, and weddings—there is one experience they all have in common. We always encourage guests to spend intentional time in nature.

Whether it’s through guided nature hikes around Dos Colinas, permaculture walks, or natural building workshops, these experiences invite people to reconnect with something that comes naturally to all living beings.

This is where we begin to witness the quiet power of nature.

Some guests decide to walk barefoot through the jungle for the first time because they simply feel called to. Others immerse themselves in one of Toji’s natural rock pools, connecting with the element of water. Some choose to walk in silence, fully present with the sounds of the forest around them.

These simple practices often leave people feeling calmer, more grounded, and more present. Spending time in nature has been associated with lower stress levels, improved immune function, and increased production of mood-supporting chemicals such as serotonin and endorphins.

Another beautiful transformation we’ve witnessed is the deep sense of community that naturally emerges after spending time outdoors together. As people reconnect with nature, they often begin reconnecting with one another as well.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by life’s challenges and feel isolated or powerless. But sharing meaningful experiences with people who are walking a similar path can lighten that emotional weight. Whether through a quiet hike, a shared meal, or simply sitting together beneath the trees, participants often discover they are not alone in what they’re experiencing.

Nature has a remarkable way of reminding us that we belong—not only to a community, but also to something much greater than ourselves.

During one of our Origins Retreats, one of our Indigenous leaders shared a reflection that has stayed with us ever since: every human being should experience this at least once in their lifetime.

We couldn’t agree more.

If you ever get called to come to one of our retreats, but are somewhat hesitant or have doubts about making the trip, don’t hesitate to write us.
